Greetings. I’m Tim of Govberg and welcome to the world of Jaeger-LeCoultre. Today I’ll be your guide to the proper usage, care and maintenance of your Jaeger-LeCoultre Rendez-Vous Night & Day 34 mm in stainless steel. This automatic winding timepiece can nevertheless be manually wound should it run down by taking the crown in the first position flush to the case, and turning it 20 to 30 times in a clockwise direction. This will be sufficient to start the beat of the balance, the advance of the seconds hand and energize the main spring such that when worn on the wrist, the natural course of kinetic action will move the winding rotor on the reverse side and keep the watch functioning. Should you wish to wind it to its maximum rated power reserve of approximately 40 hours, simply continue turning the crown in a clockwise direction. Due to the bridle style mainspring, you cannot accidentally overwind the timepiece. The bridle will simply slip and relieve any excess strain.

Now once the watch is ticking, there are two functions that allow the watch to be set more precisely. The first is stop seconds or hacking. Stop seconds halts the advance of the seconds hand and ceases the beat of the balance. Now the watch can be precisely synchronized to a known accurate reference time such as an atomic clock. This is best done by waiting for the seconds hand to align with the index at 12 and then when the seconds hand is aligned, pull the crown and advance the minute hand to the next nearest minute. Wait for the reference time to catch up and at precisely the minute push the crown back into position and resume the beat of the seconds hand. Now the watch is synchronized but you’ll note there is also an aperture at 6:00 featuring a day/night indicator in the form of a moon and stars and a sun so be sure when setting the watch to set it so that the am/pm night/day indicator properly corresponds to your time of day.

Now with respect to hazards, there are three principal ones. Water, shock and magnetism. Water is the greatest risk to any fine timepiece. Now this timepiece is water resistant to 3 BAR, 3 ATM or 30 meters which the manufacture rates as sufficient for surface exposure most likely splashing or washing the hands or accidental exposure to raindrops. Not submergence. Not swimming sports and especially not hydraulic shock such as the pressure of a hose, a shower or the plunging of the hand into a body of water.

The pull tabs on the bottom of the lugs feature easy releases that can be worked with a fingernail such that there is no need to resort to a jeweler’s tool such as a screwdriver to remove the strap if you suspect the watch will be in the presence of water. Now of course there is a quick release system as well built into the clasp such that a simple press on the underside of the clasp releases the clasp from the strap itself such that the class can be transferred for instance to a bracelet or a textile strap for water exposure.

With respect to magnetism, every mechanical timepiece features a metallic hairspring within its balance. It’s the heart of the watch’s regulating organ. Magnets are now ubiquitous in daily life being featured in high-powered wiring rooms in the home or office, speakers, subwoofers, refrigerator doors, MRI equipment. Even in the closures of purses and wallets.

Now with respect to comprehensive service, manufacturer recommends every two years having a full mechanical overhaul on the watch. The best time to test if this is necessary is during a water resistance check as the Jaeger-LeCoultre authorized agent can also check the cosmetic condition of the watch and its chronometric performance with water resistance.
